Two women accused of stealing lottery tickets from a Ghent gas station have been arrested.
Anissa K. Otter, 28, 300 Hwy. 227, New Liberty, and Wilma R. “Renee” Jones, 32, 307 Lewis Street, Ghent, went to the Ghent Cowboys station on the evening of February 19, 2013. They went into the store to pay for gas, which Jones left the store to pump.
According to Carroll County Deputy Sheriff J.T. Shaw, Otter stayed in the store and the cashier went to the bathroom while Otter was in the store. The counter was left unattended and Otter allegedly took several $5, $10 and $20 lottery tickets off the reels. She left the store and went to Jones’ car.
Jones then returned to the store and purchased some items to prevent the cashier from becoming suspicious, according to Shaw. The women left the store and went to Jones’ home. They scratched all the lottery tickets and hid the losers in a coffee table. The winners were cashed at other locations that are not being disclosed by police.
Deputy Shaw received a call from the gas station manager on February 20, 2013 regarding the theft. The cashier was able to identify Jones and Otter as the only people in the store.
Upon investigation, the losing lottery tickets were found in Jones’ home. She was arrested February 27, 2013 for Theft by Unlawful Taking Under $500, a Class A misdemeanor. Otter was arrested February 26, 2013 on the same charge.
